- History: how long has the school or program been in operation
- Experience: what types of teacher training has the school or program completed in the past (both locally and abroad)
- Quality: are the course units or workshops of top quality following a balanced curriculum on professional topics
- Qualification: does the school or program have qualified instructors (with at least a Masters degree in TEFL or a related field) and have they had experience teaching in both EFL and ESL settings
- Affiliation: is the school or program affiliated with an accredited university or professional organization (e.g., TESOL)
- Flexibility: are dates and times flexible to suit your needs and can individuals and groups participate in the training
- Customization: does the school or program offer flexibility in tailoring content to address specific needs for groups
- Cost: are rates affordable and are group discounts available
- Convenience: will the school or program help coordinate arrival and housing
- Location: is the school or program willing to complete part of the training in remote locations abroad
- Cooperation: does the school or program allow for cooperative coverage of training
- Medium: are course units or workshops offered both online and in the classroom
- Practicum: does the school or program offer live, supervised classroom practicum
- English Language Support: does the school allow TEFL certificate participants the opportunity to pursue English language studies prior to starting the certificate
- Follow-up: does the school or program offer on-going, follow-up training
- Visa Support: is the school or program authorized to issue I-20 documentation and able to offer the convenience of SEVIS receipt generation
